Shell broadly subovate, truncate posteriorly, equivalve (right and left valves equal in size and shape); lunule lanceolate, delimited by a shallow groove, extending to approximately half the length of the antero-dorsal margin; escutcheon narrow, smooth, marked by an interruption of the shell sculpture at its border; sculpture of rounded commarginal ribs, slightly wider than the interspaces, gradually increasing in width towards the ventral shell margin, fading on the anterior and posterior ends of the shell flank; oblique ribs present on the anterior and posterior ends of the flank, forming nodules at intersections with the commarginal shell sculpture; external colouration fawn to brownish purple, commonly with darker radial lines or chevron marks overlaid; internal shell surface fawn to dark purple, internal surface of the nymph usually purple; internal shell margin with tiny crenulations, visible only under a microscope or hand lenses; pallial line somewhat distant from the margin, with a very small sinus; anterior and posterior adductor muscle scars similar in size; hinge of the right valve with two anterior lateral, one posterior lateral, and three cardinal teeth; hinge of the left valve with one anterior lateral, one posterior lateral, and three cardinal teeth; ligament external, parivincular, sunken.
